The STAND alumni and staff partner with Mosaic Templars for Juneteenth Celebration

This year, STAND staff and alumni are partnering with the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, as they celebrate Juneteenth 2014, on Saturday June 21, from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas, origin in 1865, the observance of June 19 as the African-American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African-American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings.

As part of the local Juneteenth celebration, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center in Little Rock, Ark., hosts a day-long block party style event featuring activities, vendors, food and entertainment for the entire community.

The Mosaic Templar Cultural Center informs and educates the public about Black achievement, namely in business, politics, and the arts.

This year’s line-up includes: Ricky Howard, Delya Russell, Foreign Tongues, Steven Young—Artists United, Butterfly featuring Irie Soul, Epiphany and the Big John Miller Band. There will also be a new exhibit, “Arkansas African-American Legislators” and the premiere of the film “American Experience: Freedom Summer” at 1 p.m. in partnership with AETN and the UALR Institute on Race Ethnicity.

The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center’s Juneteenth celebration relies on volunteers, and STAND staff and alumni have answered the call. Thanks Toby Daughtery, Tangie Sims, Marolyn Farris, Sandy Blake, Anthony Hampton, Amber Bryant, Kelia Stuart, Tabitha Cooke, Bianca Buchanan, Dee Irwin, LaKissa Martindale and others for standing with us!
