On May 15, 2015, The STAND Foundation wrapped up its last session of The Edward Coleman Leadership Institute for the El Dorado 2015 class. The class was held at the South Arkansas Community College; each leader presented a community service project to the class. El Dorado Alderman Kensel Spivey, The STAND Foundation Program Administrator, LaJuan Bedford, and VISTA Lead Recruiter Toby Daughtery listened to each leader as they gave their presentation and provided positive feedback and practical advice. These projects included programs helping newly released inmates find the services needed to reduce residuum, several mentoring programs for both young boys and young girls, reading materials for a recently destroyed library and many more. Many of the projects are already on track to serve their projected communities.
On Saturday May 16, 2015, The STAND Foundation held a graduation ceremony for the El Dorado 2015 graduates of the Edward Coleman Leadership Institute. The event was held at the South Arkansas Community College where 21 students received certificates of graduation. Alderman and former ECLI graduate, Kensel Spivey, served as the keynote speaker of the ceremony; El Dorado Mayor, Frank Hash, offered congratulatory remarks. Senator Tracy Steele and Mayor Frank Hash distributed the graduates certificates.
A major component of STAND’s training is the development of a community service project plan, that participants are encouraged to implement. During graduation, graduates Natashia Henderson, Janice Zarebski, and Joshua Brown, presented their community service project, “M.A.C. Mentoring: Making a Change Mentoring.”
STAND is incredibly proud of its graduates and is excited to see what they will accomplish with their new leadership skills.
Classes were sponsored largely through a grant from Delta Regional Authority. Murphy Oil also provided funding to greatly aid with the facilitation of classes.
Special thanks to South Arkansas Community College president Dr. Barbara Jones and her staff for their partnership throughout all sessions.
